The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) has unveiled a trove of documents shedding new light on the tragic JFK Assassination. Following President Biden’s memorandum on June 30, 2023, the release of these records marks a significant step towards unravelling the mysteries surrounding one of the most significant events in American history.
The President’s directive, issued on December 15, 2022, compelled agencies to conduct a comprehensive review of redactions within the records, with a strong emphasis on disclosing as much information as possible. NARA, in close collaboration with various government entities, diligently carried out this review, resulting in the release of 2,672 additional documents since April 15, 2023. These documents have either been made available in their entirety or with fewer redactions, opening up fresh avenues for research and investigation.
To ensure transparency throughout the process, President Biden also instructed the involved agencies to provide transparency plans to NARA’s National Declassification Center (NDC). These plans, now accessible to the public, outline a systematic approach to continued information disclosure. As specific identified concerns diminish over time, these plans will guide the NDC in facilitating the timely release of additional information, thus fulfilling the nation’s commitment to transparency.
