The Indiana State Library is once again opening its doors for the much-anticipated annual Genealogy and Local History Fair. This year’s event, centred on the theme “At the Crossroads of America: Westward Migration and Family History,” will be held on October 26th from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the library’s History Reference Room, situated in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. This fair has long been a significant event for family history enthusiasts and genealogists looking to deepen their understanding of American migration patterns and family history.

The 2024 fair promises an insightful exploration of westward expansion and its impact on family histories, focusing on the migration patterns and early settlements of the nation’s early settlers. Featured presentations will include Eleanor Brinsko’s exploration of migration methods in “Westward Ho: Migration Methods of the United States,” and Annette Burke Lyttle’s intriguing look at the influence of advertising on migration in her talk titled “How Advertising Brought Our Ancestors to the Midwest.” These engaging sessions are tailored to help genealogists of all levels gain a deeper understanding of the forces that shaped their ancestors’ movements and lives.

In addition to the lectures, attendees will have the opportunity to engage with local history and genealogy organizations, as well as commercial vendors, who will be displaying a variety of resources and services in the exhibition hall. This is an ideal setting for both novice and experienced researchers to connect, ask questions, and explore the latest tools available in genealogical research.

The Indiana State Library, a beacon for researchers and family historians since its establishment in 1825, plays a crucial role in preserving Indiana’s rich heritage. Housing extensive collections of historical records, archives, and genealogical resources, the library has been an indispensable institution for both local and national researchers. Its focus on promoting historical and genealogical education has made it a central hub for those tracing their roots and discovering family stories embedded in the past. The Genealogy and Local History Fair has been a part of the library’s outreach efforts for many years, evolving from small gatherings of local enthusiasts to a substantial event that draws experts and attendees from across the Midwest and beyond.

The library’s family history fairs have grown considerably over the years, highlighting various themes pertinent to American history and genealogy. These fairs have become a fixture in Indiana’s cultural calendar, providing a unique space where history, research, and community converge. By focusing on topics like westward migration, these events contribute to a broader understanding of the historical forces that influenced family histories and shaped the Midwest.

The Genealogy and Local History Fair is free of charge, and although registration is not mandatory, it is highly encouraged to ensure a spot at the presentations. Attendees are advised to bring their parking tickets from the Senate Avenue garage for validation.
