The U.S. Census Bureau is scheduled to hold the fourth in a series of webinars to share updates on its efforts to lay the groundwork for the 2030 Census. The upcoming webinar will announce the sites selected for the 2026 Census Test; the first of two major on-the-ground tests planned to prepare for the 2030 Census.

The webinar will discuss the Census Bureau’s criteria and the rigorous, data-driven approach used to identify the sites. Each location contributes to the test’s objectives and requirements, particularly those designed to improve enumeration among historically undercounted and hard-to-count populations. The test’s objectives and requirements were motivated by 2020 Census lessons learned, early 2030 Census research, and public input from an August 2022 Federal Register notice. No single location covers all the requirements of this test, but the combination of sites will allow the Census Bureau to meet all the test objectives, while also meeting available budget, systems and other resource constraints.

Attempting to count every person living in the United States is an incredibly complex undertaking. Throughout the planning process, the Bureau uses research, stakeholder input, and a wide range of expertise and testing to inform decisions. The design of the 2030 Census will mature through 2029. The Census Bureau will continue to engage stakeholders and provide updates throughout the process.
