The National Archives is extending an invitation to regular users of its services to apply for membership in its User Advisory Group (UAG). This group serves a crucial function in informing the development and refinement of the services offered by The National Archives, ensuring that the needs and perspectives of its diverse user base are taken into account in strategic planning and decision-making processes.
The User Advisory Group is structured to represent a wide spectrum of the archival community, including those with a specific focus on family history, map research, and academic study. The group is designed to facilitate direct communication between The National Archives and its users, allowing for the exchange of information and feedback that is integral to the continuous improvement of archival services.
Focus Areas and Representation
The National Archives is particularly interested in individuals who can represent one or more of the following user groups:
- Onsite Personal Interest Users
- Map Room Users
- Family History and Online Family History Users
- Academic Users
Members of the UAG are tasked with bringing forward the collective views of their respective communities rather than personal opinions. Participation in the group involves attending three meetings annually, typically held at The National Archives in Kew. These meetings are scheduled on Tuesdays during working hours, and a hybrid format is available, allowing members to join via video conference. Representatives are expected to prepare for these meetings by reviewing relevant documents and engaging with their user communities to gather input.
The role of a UAG delegate is voluntary, and The National Archives provides reimbursement for travel expenses. The commitment required is a minimum of one year, during which representatives are expected to contribute actively to the group’s discussions and initiatives.

Interested individuals are invited to submit an expression of interest by emailing UAGrecruitment@nationalarchives.gov.uk. Submissions should include details about the user group you wish to represent, your experience as an archive user, and examples that demonstrate your ability to contribute effectively to the group. Additionally, applicants should outline their strategies for communicating with their user communities and collecting feedback.
The deadline for expressions of interest is Friday, 20 September 2024, at 17:00. Selection of delegates will be based on the information provided in the application.
