The Acadian Archives, situated on the University of Maine at Fort Kent campus, will host a genealogy workshop on Wednesday, December 4, at 6 p.m. This in-person event, open to the public at no cost, is an opportunity for enthusiasts of Acadian and French-Canadian heritage to explore online genealogy resources.

The workshop will delve into the use of major genealogy databases such as Ancestry.com and FamilySearch, as well as platforms like NosOrigines and WikiTree. Additionally, attendees will learn about the extensive materials available through the Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec. Staff from the Archives will provide practical tips on how to optimize searches and uncover valuable genealogical information.

Patrick Lacroix, the director of the Acadian Archives, emphasized the growing significance of digital tools in genealogy. “We are consistently engaged with genealogical inquiries throughout the year,” Lacroix explained. “While our physical collections are a treasure trove for visitors, it’s important not to overlook the wealth of online platforms that complement our holdings. This workshop aims to equip participants with strategies for enhancing their digital research.”

Although bringing a tablet or laptop is not required, attendees are encouraged to do so to maximize the hands-on aspect of the session. Upcoming workshops will highlight the Archives’ physical collections, which include unique resources such as obituary cards, historical maps, oral history interviews, and family genealogies.

In-person genealogy workshops provide unique benefits that enhance the research process. Attendees gain direct access to experts, allowing for immediate answers to questions and personalized guidance. These sessions also offer opportunities to network with other genealogy enthusiasts, fostering the exchange of ideas and tips. Moreover, the hands-on approach of in-person workshops enables participants to better understand the tools and resources available, ensuring more effective and rewarding research experiences.

Seating is limited, and prior registration is necessary to secure a spot. For details or to register, contact Patrick Lacroix via email at [email protected] or by calling 207-834-7535.
